Slurping cones from wooden benches outside King's Homemade Ice Cream in Lewes has been a Delaware beach tradition since the '70s. A 10-gallon batch of banana ice cream requires 16 pounds of ripe bananas, while butter brickle and butter pecan are quintessential old-school favorites. 201 2nd St.; 302-645-9425; http://travel.usatoday.com/destinations/greatamericanbites/ice-cream/39857952/1

Senator Tom Carper kicked off National Ice Cream Month at King’s on July 6th. He enjoyed talking with owner Rudy Spoor and his father-in-law Tom King about small business in Delaware. Rudy reported that King’s is having a good season in spite of national economics, and Carper stated that he believes small business is the backbone of America.

PRESS RELEASE: 04-05-2010
As Chelsea and Rudy begin King's 30th season in Lewes, the new owners are busy thinking of summer specials for their devoted customers.
They will begin by giving away one hundred $1 vouchers toward any purchase at their Lewes King's Ice Cream Shop to participants of CHEF's Run for Health and Education.
Following the tradition already set by Tom and Chris, Chelsea and Ruud plan to help with causes that support education in the Cape Schools.
The couple has 3 children -- Aidan is in the 4th grade at Milton Elementary and the two girls, Kiran 4 and Simone 2 will follow in his footsteps.
